Quadrille Francais

The step sequences for the Fledermaus Quadrille, Op. 363 by Johann Strauss II. This called quadrille has become a highlight of the ball night at all traditional Vienna balls. These audience quadrilles make a significant contribution to the good spirits of the ball guests and exert a magnetic appeal in Vienna for young and old alike.

1st Tour: Pantalon

Turn to your own partner (1,2),
Compliment low (3,4), high (5,6),
turn to the opposite couple (7,8).

Step to the right (1,2),
Compliment low (3,4), high (5,6),
step to the left (7,8).

Chaîne anglaise to the opposite position (1-8).
Back again and take position for the Balancé (1-8).

Balancé (diagonally right; 1-8)
and Tour de Main (1-8).

Chaîne des Dames (ladies’ chain) to the opposite position (1-8).
And back again (1-8).

Promenade to the opposite position (gentlemen left shoulder to left shoulder; 1-8).
Chaîne anglaise back to your own position (1-8).

2nd Tour: Été

Introduction. (The first couples begin:)

The first ladies and the (opposite) first gentlemen forward and back (1-8),
then diagonally right and back (1-8).

Traversé (changing places) to the opposite position (1-8),
then diagonally right and back (1-8).

Traversé (changing places) back to your own position (1-8),
then Tour de Main (1-8).

Repeat the tour; this time the second ladies and gentlemen begin.

3rd Tour: La Poule

Introduction. (The first couples begin:)

Change places of the first ladies and gentlemen (1-8),
then take positions to the centre and to the left (cross-lines together with the second ladies and gentlemen; 1-8).

Small Balancé: Point right (1, 2), point left (3, 4) and repeat both (5-8).
All couples walk to the opposite position (1-8).

The first ladies and the (opposite) first gentlemen forward and back (1-8),
then diagonally right and back (1-8).

The couples forward and back (1-8),
then Chaîne anglaise to your own position (1-8).

Repeat this tour; this time the second ladies and gentlemen begin.

4th Tour: La Trênis

Introduction. (The first couples begin:)

The first couples forward and back (1-8),
then the first couples forward (1-4) and
…the lady says farewell and changes places (5-8)
…the gentleman back (5-8).

Ladies’ arch: Gentleman passes under the ladies’ hands (1-8),
then Traversé (changing places) back to your own position (1-8).

Balancé (diagonally right; 1-8)
and Tour de Main (1-8).

Repeat the tour; this time the second couples begin.

5th Tour: La Pastourelle

Introduction. (The first couples begin:)

The first couples forward and back (1-8),
then the first couples forward (1-4) and
…the lady back (5-8),
…the gentleman says farewell and changes places (the gentlemen line up to the lady’s left and right; 5-8).

The group of three forward and back (1-8),
and repeat (1-8).

Lady’s solo of the single lady:
Lady forward (large steps: 1-4)
and back (small steps: 5-8).

Lady forward (large steps towards the group of three: 1-4),
form a circle, join hands and Compliment the previously single lady low (5, 6) and high (7, 8).

Circle and both couples to the respective other position (1-8),
then Chaîne anglaise back to your own position (1-8).

Repeat the tour; this time the second couples begin.

6th Tour: Finale

Introduction. (Form a column: pass hands along the column.)

Column twice forward and back (1-8, 1-8).

Break the column; the ladies link arms with their gentleman.

All couples forward and back (1-8),
then diagonally right and back (1-8).

Change places “gentleman leads” (1-8),
then diagonally right and back (1-8).

Change places “gentleman leads” (1-8),
then Tour de Main (1-8).

Column twice forward and back (1-8, 1-8).

Shadow position: left lady’s hand in left gentleman’s hand.

Presentation of the lady: present the lady and return (1-8).
Ladies’ exchange: present the lady (1-4), exchange ladies and return to position (5-8).

Chaîne des Dames (ladies’ chain):
Ladies quarter-circle in front of the gentlemen (1, 2),
half Tour de Main with the other lady (3, 4),
then around your own gentleman (5-8).

Chaîne des Dames (ladies’ chain) repeat, back to the other gentleman (1-8).

Presentation of the (other) lady: present the lady and return (1-8).
Ladies’ exchange: present the lady (1-4), exchange ladies and return to position (5-8).

Column twice forward and back (1-8, 1-8).
